Yet on Thursday night, the ultimate victor of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors was revealed.

From nineteen participants, just a handful were left standing: Traitors and loyal players facing off for the winnings.

Soon, the competition tightened to only three contenders: the final players.

In the end, funny man Alan Carr emerged as the champion, in a shocking outcome that went viral and left him emotional.

"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, revealing to the other players that he'd always been one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."

"You played amazingly," they consoled him. "Everything's fine."

Online platforms immediately exploded with this development. "Most awful traitor ever being the best traitor ever," wrote one user.

"It couldn't have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while a third called it "the television highlight of the year."

His chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, will receive the entire winnings, with the total amount amounting to £87,500.

Next up was the competition, with the final players boarding a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.

This task saw them ripping up portraits of former contestants. Spare a thought for a player who managed to get hit on the head multiple times by the lid of a substantial container.

Soon after, the moment arrived for the roundtable.

Two traitors made a pact in advance, vowing to support each other. "We've come a long way, I won't betray him," said a player, while their partner just giggled.

And one adhered to his promise. But, having slipped unnoticed for the majority of the competition, their partner still received the majority elimination votes.

The remaining traitor appeared he was in significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Being alone, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, a rudderless ship."

Social media and onlookers were equally disappointed.

"I hoped against that player to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," said an observer.

"You will forever be remembered in the show's legacy," posted a different viewer.

But there was little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Before long, the game reached the endgame - which was the moment everyone anticipated.

The last players stood over the fire pit. Meanwhile, the partnership collapsed, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.

One contestant was painfully banished - following a surprising decision from their partner, who betrayed them.

"It hurts to be stabbed in the back at the final moment in that manner," remarked the eliminated player. Later, we learned that when they message, the eliminated contestant calls their former ally as a traitor.

Ultimately, only three contestants were still competing: the final trio.

One player, looking incredibly smug, voted to end the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and everything depended on the third, who made the identical choice - resulting in the deceiver emerged victorious.

According to commentators, the scene where the other players consoled the champion was "compelling television". "I predict it could be in the running for memorable moment at television honors," they commented.

Happily, the champion quickly regained composure from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate his victory.

"What a rollercoaster. I was awful at lying, I had no poker face and now I stand the champion," the winner said.
