The UK's top artificial intelligence institute has revealed a new mission to help protect the nation from cyber-attacks targeting essential systems including power, transportation and utilities.

The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a scientific research initiative specifically created to defend the nation from malicious attacks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This new direction follows organizational reforms at the government-backed institute, including the resignation of its previous CEO last month after both staff concerns and ministerial calls for comprehensive reform.
Rising Online Risks
The new mission comes amid rising apprehension about the nation's susceptibility to internet outages and online threats.
Recent incidents have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a major outage affecting international online platforms and recent cyber-attacks that disrupted production at key facilities and supply chains across multiple companies.
Leadership and Oversight
A previous senior officer of the Britain's aerial defense command will deliver recommendations next month on how the government-funded institute can best support the scope of official artificial intelligence goals in national security, national security and information gathering.
Operational Restructuring
The institute's chair, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been closed, transferred out or completed because they aren't consistent with the fresh focus.
Workplace Issues
The center has faced workplace difficulties since last year as employees objected against restructuring, culminating in a collection of workers filing a whistleblower complaint to the proper supervisory commission.
The institute's leadership stated that these staff complaints were externally examined by a neutral third party that found them to have no substance.
Broader Scientific Scope
The organization will also prioritize utilizing machine learning for environmental applications and health innovations.
Researchers will create methods to use the rapidly-developing tools to more rapidly and accurately forecast changes in weather patterns, sea conditions and arctic coverage, partly to more effectively guide national crisis management units.
The institute will also target significant carbon footprint lowering in transport systems, industrial operations and vital networks.

In the healthcare industry, the emphasis will be on building computerized models of cardiac organs, representing a leading edge of individualized AI-powered treatment that could enhance treatment approaches and recovery prospects for critically ill cardiac patients.
