A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
