Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unneeded gifts might be viewed as slightly impolite – unless it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents are currently locked away in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away for years.
The detailed catalog remains officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The question raised if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a political career.
