Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A recent initialism emerged several months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed peace has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
