Far-Right Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Centered On Security and Migration
Known for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily focused on promises to combat rising violence and significantly curb immigration.
He frequently cited immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face deportation.
His policy ideas featured Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northern border.

Ruling Without a Clear Mandate
Despite his sweeping electoral win, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative landscape could challenge his agenda, such as a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"We have several questions about what a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," said a political expert.
The analyst continued, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts associated with the right. However the area with far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
