Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's historic comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
If Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
