Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat put up eighty-six first-half points versus the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested over alleged illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards stated Rozier had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."

Portland additionally secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
