Larry Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".
Summers, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected Summers' decision to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after both chambers of Congress voted on Tuesday to pass a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Epstein.
The legislation will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following pressure from his base.
Message Details
A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned several high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to connect the academic to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the public, Summers stated he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided choice to persist in interacting with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore trust and fix connections with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
Summers held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was not connected with the organization.
Summers joined the board of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
