Leeds Hold Liverpool at Arm's Length to Earn Hard-Fought Point at Anfield
A pair of undefeated runs continued intact at Anfield, however only one side could derive real satisfaction from the outcome. Leeds United executed a textbook game plan of stifling and containing Liverpool, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering issues behind the current title holders' recent recovery.
Resolute Masterclass Earns Crucial Point
A lacklustre scoreless draw, the first in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely attributable to the immense solidity of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, coupled with the Anfield side's inability to break down a well-drilled Leeds unit. The Merseysiders were reduced to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the full-time whistle on a laboured display.
"Should I don't utilise the whole group and we have a schedule like this, I would never make changes," Daniel Farke stated. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his recent couple of years was difficult. He is in red-hot form but it's vital I manage him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the heart."
The Hosts' Frustration in the Final Third
Liverpool initially showed more energy and precision than in recent outings, with the right wing-back prominent on the flank. However, golden chances were few and far between. The home side's best openings in the opening period involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- After a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the France forward drifted infield and forced a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' shot-stopper could not hold the shot, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
- Ekitiké later sprinted through onto a long ball but was held by Jaka Bijol; despite staying on his feet, his appeals for a penalty were waved away.
Spurned Chances Prove Costly
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he failed to find the target with his clearest opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the striker misdirected a header that hit the Perri while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest sight of goal came from an Alisson mistake. The Brazilian shot-stopper played a careless clearance directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot returned towards goal was saved by the recovering Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The match descended into a bitty encounter, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from distance. The subsequent scramble led to Ampadu controlling the ball, awarding Liverpool a free-kick in a promising position, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
The Liverpool manager introduced a three change to inject urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his team in front from a set-piece, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring run for Leeds in the final minutes, but his tap-in was flagged out for a tight offside call. Ultimately, both teams had to settle for a share of the points.
