Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
