The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
