Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his trip to Washington that Vladimir Putin's move to request negotiations with the US president indicates the Kremlin is on the defensive. Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Moscow is rushing to resume dialogue immediately after it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks referred to recent comments about providing long-range missiles to the Ukrainian military.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

An ex- American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on the Kremlin." He added, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pushing Russia to engage sincerely appear to have diminished."

The development came after the US president had recently been hardening his language toward Moscow until the recent conversation with Putin, which the Kremlin characterized as "highly frank and trustful."

EU Energy Restrictions and Economic Effects

The European Union have established a mandate for energy importers into the EU to prove their products are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a official guideline released on recently. This step is included in the EU's forthcoming prohibition on imports of fuels made from Russian crude, which is included in its 18th restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in the region.

Financial analysts observed that trading activity appeared to be considering the possible reduction of India's imports of Russian crude. Some Indian refiners are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a phased reduction, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the situation.

"This represents a positive development for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a big customer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, adding that crude values were stable on the trading day.

Security Situation and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile assault targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, causing disruptions in multiple regions. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian forces launched hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russians use every single day to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Ukraine's president, adding that strikes affected the areas of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Diplomatic Reactions

Ukraine's representative to Washington, Olga Stefanishyna, stated that Russia demonstrated its real attitude to negotiations through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia once again opted for weapons over talks, making this assault into a clear setback to current diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

At the same time, the European Union's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, announced that the EU had little option but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russia. Kallas announced a "roadmap" to get ready for possible security challenges by 2030, including a new anti-drone system to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

This initiative, dubbed the "European drone defence initiative," is projected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be completely operational by the following year. EU authorities hopes to secure the backing of member state representatives at a meeting in the coming days.
